The distribution board is the heart of the electrical installation in your home. It distributes the power around the rooms and - most importantly - protects against faults and electric shock. But many homes in Skopje and across North Macedonia still have outdated boards from the 1960s and 1970s that do not meet modern safety standards.
Here are 7 clear signs that it is time to replace your old board:
1. You have ceramic (rewireable) fuses
If your board has round ceramic fuses (white or grey caps that screw out), that is 60+ year old technology. These fuses react slowly in a short circuit, and they do not protect people from electric shock.
The modern replacement: circuit breakers (type B curve) + an RCD (FID/FI) protective device. They react within milliseconds, and the RCD protects against electric shock.
2. You have no RCD (FID/FI) protection
A FID (Fault Current Device) or FI (Fehlerstromschutzschalter), in other words an RCD, is mandatory under modern safety standards. Without one, if somebody at home touches a bare wire, or if water splashes onto a live electrical appliance, the power will not be cut in time.
What is an RCD?
An RCD measures the difference between the current going into the home and the current coming out. When there is a “leak” (current escaping through a person or another path to earth), the RCD reacts within 30 milliseconds and cuts the power - before it becomes fatal.
3. Your fuses trip more and more often
If your board trips frequently (several times a week), it means either you have an overloaded circuit or the fuses are worn out. Never fit a fuse with a higher rating just to “solve” the problem - that removes the protection without addressing the root cause.
4. You use more electricity than you did 10 years ago
Old boards were sized for homes with far fewer appliances. Today every home has:
- A washing machine + a tumble dryer
- A dishwasher
- An electric water heater of 80-150L
- An air conditioner (or two)
- An electric or induction hob
- A microwave, an oven, a coffee machine, a toaster
- An electric car charger (in newer homes)
An old board rated at 35A or 40A is not suitable for modern consumption. We recommend upgrading to 63A or 80A.
5. The board is damaged, bodged together, or full of “spaghetti” wiring
If inside the board there are bare wires, connections made without terminals, a tangle of cable, or signs of overheating (darkened plastic), that is urgent. Old boards are often “maintained” with makeshift fixes that are a potential source of fire.
6. You do not know which fuse controls which circuit
A modern board has every fuse clearly labelled (with text or a symbol). If a fault in the kitchen means switching off 3 fuses before you find the right one, that is a poor installation. A modern board also has separate circuits for: lighting, sockets, kitchen, water heater, air conditioning and so on.
7. You bought the flat before 1990
If you live in a flat built before 1990 and the board has never been replaced, you almost certainly need a new one. An electrical installation has a service life of 30-40 years. After that the material degrades, the insulation dries out and the contacts oxidise.
Especially important for: the 1970s blocks
The blocks in Karpos 1-4, Jane Sandanski, Senjak (Stip) and old Veles have typical 1960s and 1970s installations that are at the end of their service life. We recommend an urgent inspection if you have not had one in the last 5 years.
